The Crow Manifesto is dedicated to
helping bring perspective to the importance of science, technology,
engineering, math, and the environment in America. Through a combination of
personal stories and historical research, it seeks to help people understand
what America was like, what happened, and what it’s like now.
For decades, advances in these
fields have been key to America’s success.
And these advances have been driven
for more than a hundred years in large part by government-supported efforts
such as the Bureau of Reclamation, Manhattan Project, National Science
Foundation, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), National
Institutes of Health, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and
Department of Energy.
Beginning in 1986 when President
Ronald Reagan famously said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English
language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help’,” however, all of
this began to change. Reagan’s remarks were the seed from which attacks have
grown on these fields and their government sponsorship. Today, the scope and
scale of these attacks are unprecedented in American history.
The attacks pose a grave risk to
continued American success.
The mission of the Crow Manifesto
is to be authentic and truthful in its stories about these issues. Hopefully,
they will entertain and educate, too. In this spirit, personal experiences will
be recounted as faithfully as possible, and any accompanying facts will be
supported by references to sources of information.
In this era of “Do Your Own
Research,” you are encouraged to use those references to formulate an informed
opinion about the subject matter written about here. As the American poet Edgar
Allan Poe wrote in 1845, “Believe nothing that you hear, and only half that you
see.”
